In view of the deleterious effects of infected necrotizing pancreatitis, prophylactic antibiotics have been widely used. The infected pancreatic necrosis is a principal late complication and a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with severe acute pancreatitis. RESULTS: Seven randomized studies with 559 acute pancreatic patients were included. Main outcome measures were postoperative infections, pancreatic infections, multiple organ failure (MOF), systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), length of hospital stay, antibiotic therapy and mortality.
